          Description

ActionAg is an information system platform designed to provide not only weather, climate and agricultural information to farmers, but also recommended actions. While providing greater access to information is crucial for increasing resilience to extreme weather and climate change, if farmers do not know how to interpret and use this information effectively, its benefits will be not be fully realized. ActionAg addresses this challenge by using artificial intelligence to interpret a wide variety of best-available weather, climate and agricultural information in the public and private sectors - including local weather forecasts, long-term climate predictions, crop calendars, market analysis and agricultural best practices, etc. - to generate and disseminate local, personalized information, early warning and recommended actions. These recommended actions will be simple and feasible, such as a reminder to water your crops more on a hot, dry day or suggesting to spray for pests when conditions are favorable for outbreaks. Recommended actions can also be seasonal, such as suggesting the planting of specific drought-resistant crops that are performing well in markets for the upcoming season.

Although mobile phone use is rapidly expanding in developing countries, it is recognized that many people still face significant smart phone challenges, including access, cost and complexity. As a result, this platform will offer two user interfaces - one utilizing SMS push-notifications and the other, an Android App. SMS push-notifications will provide a low-cost, easy-to-use service and deliver daily, weekly and quarterly (seasonal) messages containing brief, location-specific weather, climate and agricultural information as well as recommended actions. The Android App, although more sophisticated, will allow greater access to information as well as additional personalization by offering farmers the option to customize their information and recommended actions beyond just location.
